THREE MOVES IN A DAY
I. Steps
We take a step,
We take another step —
The morning flares,
Becoming lunch at Fido’s,
Then afternoon with doves,
And so on and so on.
Is it not evening then
That makes its move,
Falling like a shawl
Over the hunch we had
That day is finished?
And then, of course,
Another morning bares
Its flaring eyes.
We waken, we take a step,
Another step,
And yet we take another.
II. Flash
The world came to itself
In a hush of twilight.
We hardly knew what to do with it.
But then it came to us
In a flash of rosemary
And a splash of dill —
And we drank it in
And made the most of it.
III. Grotto
If there were more than this,
The grotto of my heart
Where waters sing
Their solos in constant harmony
And time waits in a blue pool,
I would wash moments from my eyes
Till I could see clear
To the bottom of it all.
